Online Early Careers Research Sessions

Researchers at SAMS will contribute to  remote class sessions for school learners about their research and journey into their respective fields. Topics for this are flexible, depending on suitable dates. This can include diving into research on:

• Marine mammals
• Oceanography
• Development of marine robotics
• Seaweed and algae
• Microbiology
• Marine policy and conservation

For the Love of Whales

In collaboration with Developing the Young Workforce, Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust, British Divers Marine Life Rescue and Whale and Dolphin Conservation, SAMS is organising cetacean themed events, for the rural High Schools of Tobermory, Isle of Mull, and the Isle of Tiree. This will provide a holistic perspective of marine mammals on the West coast of Scotland, through many different activities, based on the research of SAMS and HWDT, alongside citizen science contributions.

Girls do Physics

The Girls Do Physics event at SAMS is designed to inspire and empower underrepresented genders in physics-based roles by introducing them to the exciting world of marine research and careers. Participants will explore how physics is applied in oceanography, climate science, and marine technology through interactive workshops, hands-on experiments, and discussions with leading scientists. This event aims to break down barriers, showcase diverse career pathways, and encourage the next generation of physicists to consider the vital role physics plays in understanding and protecting our climate and ocean.

Our World from Space

“Our World From Space” is an outreach and engagement project funded by the UK Space Agency and NERC, that aims to share with local schools and the public how scientists can enhance our understanding of our planet’s changing environment through satellite data and space technology, focusing on oceanic and coastal regions, climate change impacts, and ecosystem shifts. This initiative aims to equip future generations with knowledge and awareness of satellite technology while inspiring active participation in environmental stewardship.
