Grand Opera: Who owns a melody?

On Saturday 21 September, the ‘Salonorchester’ will perform arranged versions of Vincenzo Bellini’s famous opera ‘Norma’, condensing the four and a half-hour long opera into just 12 minutes. This short talk by Prof Martin Kretschmer explores the legal and historical implications of turning a whole opera into a catchy selection of hits. What is a work? What kind of control can an author or publisher exercise over what other people do with their music? Watch the live performances at 1pm and 2pm and explore the background at this short talk at 1.30pm.
