Through a variety of interactive activities and lab tours, the whole family can explore our cutting-edge scientific research as well as try ice cream freshly made using liquid nitrogen. Additionally, you can explore arts and architecture across campus, and follow our self-guided trail with photos and historical references on information panels, bringing our development to life.

For younger visitors, the King’s Buildings Treasure Hunt provides an opportunity to explore the hidden features of our campus. On the day, visitors’ maps will be available from purple-shirted assistants across the campus, but here’s some further details…

In the Ashworth Laboratories, explore the University of Edinburgh’s Natural History Collection with a large array of vertebrate and invertebrate specimens on display including dolphin, elephant seal, and anteater samples.

Examine our collection of geological specimens and historical objects in the Grant Institute, reflecting the spectrum of Earth Science materials from fossils to volcanoes and everything in between.

Tour the Joseph Black Building, including the stunning new social space incorporating the Chemistry museum. Drop-in activities (suitable for all) let you explore chemistry research and meet our chemists.

Over in the Sanderson Building, discover our timeline of pioneering engineering alumni; gain insights into student projects such as HYPED; and try your hand at flying drones on our simulator.

In the Roger Land Building, there will be hands-on exhibits and displays related to our exciting cutting-edge research including synthetic biology, biotechnology and biomedical sciences.

Watch a demonstration of the 2.5 million litre FloWave test tank, recreating complex waves and fast tidal currents in a laboratory setting.  Discuss the research with project engineers.

From farm to fork just how much of the food we produce is lost or goes to waste? Explore environmental science research in SRUC (Scotland’s Rural College) and tour the horticulture and garden design teaching facilities.
