Our Speaker:
Dom Glatt is a research dietitian completing a PhD project at Queen Margaret University in collaboration with NICHE at Ulster University and the University of Exeter. Her research focuses on assessing the impact of vitamin D status on muscle health in school children with a secondary interest in the impact of vitamin D knowledge on vitamin D habits and practices.
In the past decade, research has shown that vitamin D is involved with many health outcomes, including muscle, reproductive, immune, and cardiovascular health, to name a few. However, the current definition for vitamin D status is based on bone health functionality alone, and we do not know how much is needed to support these other roles. Unfortunately, up to 50% of school children could be vitamin D deficient or insufficient by the end of the winter months, which may compromise their health and growth potential.
